The story of Valley of the Yosemite

Bierstadt first saw Yosemite in the summer of 1863 on his second western trip, travelling with the writer Fitz Hugh Ludlow, and wrote to his friend John Hay that he had found the Garden of Eden in America. He painted Valley of the Yosemite in 1864 in his New York studio from the plein-air studies of that trip. It is a smaller work than his large panoramas and was painted on paperboard, so it is often seen as a sketch for Looking Down Yosemite Valley, California of 1865. A cluster of deer rests in the foreground and the setting sun casts a yellow-orange glow over the whole valley.

Albert Bierstadt

Albert Bierstadt was a German-American painter best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West. He joined several journeys of the westward expansion to paint the scenes. He was not the first artist to record the sites, but he was the foremost painter of them for the remainder of the 19th century.
