Five crippled beggars on crutches and wooden stumps drag themselves across a sunlit courtyard between brick walls, each in a different hat: a paper crown, a soldier's cap, a beret, a peasant cap and a bishop's mitre. Fox tails hang from their clothes. A woman with an alms bowl walks away at the right. Louvre, Paris.

The story of The Beggars (The Cripples)

This tiny panel (18.5 by 21.5 cm) was painted in 1568 during the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, and some scholars read the fox tails as a reference to the Gueux rebels. Similar motifs appear in Bruegel's earlier work, so the meaning remains debated.
