The story of The Fight Between Carnival and Lent
Bruegel painted this oak panel in 1559, the same year as his Netherlandish Proverbs, in the period when he moved from drawing to panel painting. The contest of Carnival and Lent has literary roots going back to about the year 400, and a direct visual source was a 1558 etching by Hieronymus Cock after Frans Hogenberg. The panel measures 118 by 164 cm.
