Herod's soldiers, here in sixteenth-century armour, ride into a snowbound Flemish village while a troop of horsemen waits in the square and villagers plead at doors and in the street. This is the Royal Collection version, overpainted long ago so that food, animals and bundles replace the murdered children. Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.

The story of Massacre of the Innocents

Several oil-on-oak versions of The Massacre of the Innocents were painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his son Pieter Brueghel the Younger, translating the Biblical account into a winter scene in the Southern Netherlands. The version in the British Royal Collection (c. 1565-1567) is now thought to be the only one by Bruegel the Elder. It was for some time at Hampton Court Palace and has been at Windsor Castle since 2017. It appears that Emperor Rudolf II had it overpainted to hide the dead and dying children, who were replaced by food items and sacks of goods.
