The story of The Parable of the Blind (The Blind Leading the Blind)

Bruegel painted this work in distemper on linen canvas (86 by 154 cm) in 1568, a year before his death, illustrating the parable in Matthew 15:14. It was made while the Council of Troubles was suppressing religious dissent in the Spanish Netherlands, and scholars debate whether it carries a political or religious message.
