The story of Twilight in the Wilderness
Church painted Twilight in the Wilderness in 1860 from sketches made on his many trips to Maine, including Mount Desert Island and Mount Katahdin. Wikipedia notes it is likely a composite of field studies. There are no signs of human activity; the only animal is a small bird perched at the left. The sky, with its graded purples, oranges and yellows, shows the influence of Turner. The scholar John K. Howat calls it the most impressive of Church's pictures of untouched North American woodland.

Frederic Edwin Church
Frederic Edwin Church was an American landscape painter born in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters, best known for painting large landscapes, often depicting mountains, waterfalls, and sunsets. Church's paintings put an emphasis on realistic detail, dramatic light, and panoramic views. He debuted some of his major works in single-painting exhibitions to a paying and often enthralled audience in New York City. In his prime, he was one of the most famous painters in the United States.
