The story of Cornard Wood, near Sudbury, Suffolk

Painted in 1748, the landscape has been held by the National Gallery since 1875. The title has been in use since 1828 and comes from a publication tied to the first posthumous sale of Gainsborough's works in 1789-90. The church steeple in the distance has been identified as St Mary's at Great Henny, though that is unproven.

Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Along with his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes.
