The story of The Marquesa de Pontejos

María Ana de Pontejos y Sandoval married the brother of the Count of Floridablanca, Charles III's prime minister, in 1786, at the age of twenty-four, and Goya painted her shortly after the wedding. Her costume imitates the shepherdess fashions of Marie Antoinette's court at Versailles, and the carnation she holds was an emblem of love often shown with brides.
