The story of Self-Portrait with Dr Arrieta
In 1819 Goya suffered a second serious illness, and his doctor, Eugenio García Arrieta, nursed him back to health. On recovering, Goya presented Arrieta with this painting, the last of his many self-portraits. The inscription below the figures, in Goya's words, thanks his friend Arrieta for the care with which he saved his life during the acute and dangerous illness he suffered at the end of 1819, in his seventy-third year, and records that he painted it in 1820. Many scholars have seen religious themes in the work, which gives it the look of an ex-voto.

Francisco Goya
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His paintings, drawings, and engravings reflected contemporary historical upheavals and influenced important 19th- and 20th-century painters. Goya is often referred to as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art.
