The story of Cemetery, New Mexico

The cemetery is at Taos Pueblo, where Hartley stayed in 1918-19. He painted it from memory in 1923-24 while travelling in Europe, one of his 'recollections', a memory-based method he adopted in emulation of Albert Pinkham Ryder.
