The story of Lobster Fishermen

Hartley painted it while living in an abandoned church in the fishing village of Corea, Maine, after returning to his home state in 1937 and adopting a self-consciously primitive, folk-art-influenced style. The Met notes compositional similarities to Cezanne's The Card Players. A preparatory study from 1940 is also in the Met.
