The story of The Sicilian Vespers

Hayez painted three versions of The Sicilian Vespers, in 1822, 1826-27 and 1846. The first was commissioned by the Marchioness Visconti d'Aragona in Milan and the second by Count Arese. The third and largest, 225 x 300 cm, was made while Hayez lived in Naples for Vincenzo Ruffo, Prince of Sant'Antimo, his main patron; it is now in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome.
