The story of Madonna and Child (Pisa Altarpiece)
This was the central panel of the Pisa Altarpiece, commissioned on 19 February 1426 by the notary Giuliano di Colino degli Scarsi for the chapel of Saint Julian in the Carmine church in Pisa, for 80 florins. The altarpiece was dismembered in the 18th century and its panels are now in several museums. The grapes foreshadow the Eucharist.
