The story of Sant'Anna Metterza (Virgin and Child with Saint Anne)

The panel was painted around 1424-25 for the church of Sant'Ambrogio in Florence. It is a collaboration: Masolino, the older painter, designed it and painted Saint Anne and the angels above and around her, while the young Masaccio painted the Virgin and the Child, whose weight and modelled light were new in Florentine painting. The type, a 'Metterza' (Anne placing the Virgin and Child before the viewer), is a Tuscan devotional format. The panel is in the Uffizi, Florence.
