The story of The Constitution of 3 May 1791

The Constitution of 3 May 1791 was painted between January and October 1891 to mark the centenary of the Constitution, and is one of Matejko's last works (he died in November 1893). It shows a crowd greeting the adoption of the Constitution, with Poland's last king Stanisław August Poniatowski, the Marshals of the Great Sejm and other leading figures; some twenty individuals have been identified by historians. The painting was displayed in Lwów until 1920, then moved to Kraków, hidden during the Second World War and later moved to Warsaw, where it hangs in the Royal Castle.

Jan Matejko

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Stańczyk (1862), Rejtan (1866), Union of Lublin (1869), Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
