The story of Rejtan, or the Fall of Poland

Rejtan, or the Fall of Poland was finished in 1866. It shows Tadeusz Rejtan's protest against the First Partition of Poland at the Partition Sejm of 1773, when he tried to physically stop the deputies from leaving the chamber to ratify the partition. The first public display brought controversy and mixed reviews, but the work later became one of Matejko's most famous. Emperor Franz Joseph I acquired it and it hung in Vienna until 1920; the Polish government bought it that year, and it has been at the Royal Castle in Warsaw since 1931, apart from a brief period in the Second World War when the Germans looted it.

Jan Matejko

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Stańczyk (1862), Rejtan (1866), Union of Lublin (1869), Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
