The story of Mr and Mrs Andrews

Gainsborough painted Robert Andrews and Frances Carter, a recently married couple, about 1750 when he was about twenty-three and back in his home town of Sudbury, Suffolk. The picture combines a double portrait with a view of the estate that formed part of Frances's dowry. It stayed in the sitters' family until 1960, was little known before an exhibition in Ipswich in 1927, and was one of four paintings chosen to represent British art in Paris in 1953.
