The story of Mrs. Richard Brinsley Sheridan
The sitter is Elizabeth Ann Linley (1754–1792), a celebrated singer and the wife of the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Gainsborough painted her full length in a landscape between 1785 and 1787 and showed the picture at his studio in Schomberg House, Pall Mall, in 1786. It later passed to the Bouverie family, was sold to Alfred de Rothschild in 1872 for £3,000 and stayed with the Rothschilds until 1936. Bought through Duveen Brothers by the A. W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust in April 1937, it was given to the National Gallery of Art.

He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes.
