The story of Portrait of Ann Ford

Gainsborough painted the musician and singer Ann Ford in 1760, the year after he moved to Bath to paint the residents and visitors of the fashionable spa town. The full-length portrait shows her seated cross-legged with her instrument, and it promoted both Ford's career and the painter's growing reputation as a portraitist. Two years later she married Philip Thicknesse, a travel writer and a friend of Gainsborough.
