The story of Portrait of Anne, Countess of Chesterfield

The sitter is Anne Stanhope, née Thistlethwaite (died 1798), wife of Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield. Gainsborough painted her in 1777–78 together with a companion portrait of her husband, and the picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1778. It stayed in the Stanhope family until 1923, passed to the 6th Earl of Carnarvon, and was sold at Christie's in 1925 to Sir John Leigh. J. Paul Getty acquired it through Thomas Agnew & Sons in 1959.
