The story of Portrait of James Christie

James Christie (1730–1803) was the Scottish auctioneer who founded Christie's in London. Gainsborough shows him leaning on the frame of a large landscape, probably one of the painter's own. The portrait was one of twelve pictures Gainsborough sent to the Royal Academy's exhibition in 1778. It hung at Christie's premises for many years before J. Paul Getty acquired it.
