The story of The Fall of the Cowboy

The Fall of the Cowboy (1895, oil on canvas) shows two cowboys at a barbed-wire gate and is read as a symbol of the end of the open range. Infrared imaging revealed that Remington painted over an earlier composition showing a locomotive and cattle train, choosing instead this quieter, more atmospheric scene. It is in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth (1961.230).
