The story of Friends or Foes? (The Scout)

Remington painted Friends or Foes? (The Scout) between 1902 and 1905, in oil on a canvas of 27 x 40 inches. The rider, a Blackfoot, cannot tell whether he will be welcome at the camp whose lights glow in the distance. The quiet, tense mood marks a turn in Remington's work away from action scenes and toward nostalgia for a way of life he felt was disappearing.
