The story of The Honourable Mrs Graham
Mary Cathcart married Thomas Graham, later Lord Lynedoch, in December 1774, and Gainsborough's full-length portrait of her was shown at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1777, where her looks caused a stir. She died of tuberculosis in 1792; her grieving husband put the portrait into storage, and it stayed out of sight for 65 years until it was exhibited in Manchester in 1857. Two years later his cousin and heir Robert Graham bequeathed it to the newly opened Scottish National Gallery.
