The story of The Linley Sisters

Elizabeth Ann and Mary Linley were singers, daughters of the Bath composer Thomas Linley the elder. Gainsborough showed their double portrait at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1772, alongside his portrait of Sir William Pulteney. In 1785 he retouched it at the family's request to bring the sisters' costumes up to date. Their brother William Linley gave the painting to Dulwich Picture Gallery in 1835.
