The story of The Nightmare

The Nightmare is a 1781 oil painting by Henry Fuseli showing a sleeping woman with an ape-like incubus on her chest while a horse looks on. It was first shown at the Royal Academy in 1782 and became his first commercially successful work; Fuseli painted other versions, and an engraving by Thomas Burke, circulated from January 1783, earned its publisher more than 500 pounds (Wikipedia, The Nightmare).
