The story of Portrait of Juan de Pareja
Velázquez painted Juan de Pareja, the enslaved man who served as an assistant in his workshop and became a painter in his own right, in Rome in 1650, while he was in Italy buying works of art for Philip IV. The portrait was shown at the Pantheon on 19 March 1650, where, according to Antonio Palomino, painters from many countries said that the other pictures were art but this one alone was 'truth'. It is the earliest known portrait of a Spanish man of Moorish descent. It was the first painting to sell for more than £1,000,000, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art called its purchase in 1970 'among the most important acquisitions in the Museum's history'.
