The story of The Needlewoman

The Needlewoman (La costurera) was painted between about 1635 and 1643 and is unfinished: the head, modelled in light and shadow, is the most complete part, while the arms and hands are only briefly sketched. It has been proposed that the sitter was the artist's daughter Francisca, and the face resembles that of The Lady with a Fan. Its attribution was once questioned, but the traditional attribution to Velázquez is supported by an inventory of the works in his rooms. It is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
