The story of Self-Portrait in a Straw Hat

Vigee Le Brun painted her first version of the self-portrait in Brussels in 1782, after seeing Rubens's portrait of Susanna Lunden in Antwerp, which made a deep impression on her. The National Gallery picture is a replica of that first version, painted after her return to Paris, and has been in the National Gallery, London since 1897.
