The story of The Death of Nelson

West met Nelson in 1801; Nelson told him how much he admired The Death of General Wolfe and said he hoped to be the subject of West's next similar painting. After Nelson was killed at Trafalgar in 1805, West produced this picture within six months, basing the portraits on over 50 survivors but admitting it showed what might have been rather than what happened. Within just over a month 30,000 people saw it in his studio. It was presented to the Walker Art Gallery by Bristow H. Hughes.
