The story of Mother of Pearl and Silver: The Andalusian
The model is Ethel Whibley, née Birnie Philip, Whistler's secretary and sister-in-law. The title refers to the colour scheme of black, mother-of-pearl and silver: her grey silk evening dress is in the Parisian Belle Époque manner, while the transparent layered sleeves of her black bolero jacket evoke a traditional Andalusian costume.
