The story of Souvenir de Mortefontaine

Souvenir de Mortefontaine (Recollection of Mortefontaine) was painted in 1864 and is held in the Louvre. It is generally acknowledged as one of Corot's masterpieces and among the most successful of his later, more poetic works. The scene is idealized while still drawn from the real world, and its broad treatment of lake and landscape and careful attention to light verge on Impressionism, though with a more muted palette.
