The story of Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna

Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna was painted by Leighton in Rome from 1853 to 1855 and was his first major work, a canvas more than two metres tall and more than five metres wide. It shows a scene from Vasari's account of the 13th-century procession that carried Cimabue's altarpiece of the Madonna and Child through the streets of Florence to Santa Maria Novella. Since 1988 it has hung in the National Gallery, London, on long-term loan from the Royal Collection.

Frederic Leighton, 1st Baron Leighton,, known as Sir Frederic Leighton between 1878 and 1896, was a British Victorian painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. His works depicted historical, biblical, and classical subject matter in an academic style. His paintings were enormously popular and expensive, during his lifetime, but fell out of critical favour for many decades in the early 20th century.
