The story of Cymon and Iphigenia

The painting is undated but was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1884. It is based on a tale in Boccaccio's Decameron. Leighton is said to have searched for six months for the right model for Iphigenia before choosing the actress Dorothy Dene, whose younger sister Lena appears as the child slave. The painting took eight months to complete after some 56 preparatory drawings. It measures 163 by 328 cm, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales bought it at Christie's in London in 1976.
