The story of Winding the Skein

Winding the Skein was one of two canvases Leighton hung at the Royal Academy in 1878, the year he became its President; the other was Nausicaa. Two Greek girls work on the flat roof of a house that looks over a distant sea and mountains. The seated girl in white holds the skein of wool and the younger one, in red and white, winds it into a ball. Wikipedia compares the quiet theme to the earlier Music Lesson.

Frederic Leighton

Frederic Leighton, 1st Baron Leighton,, known as Sir Frederic Leighton between 1878 and 1896, was a British Victorian painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. His works depicted historical, biblical, and classical subject matter in an academic style. His paintings were enormously popular and expensive, during his lifetime, but fell out of critical favour for many decades in the early 20th century.
