The story of Charles I at the Hunt

Also called Le Roi a la chasse, the 266 by 207 cm portrait of about 1635 shows Charles dismounted in civilian dress and standing as if surveying his domain, with the sea (perhaps the Solent) in the distance. Van Dyck sets the king in lighter colours against the darker ground and the shadowed servant and horse, and the Louvre describes the pose as a subtle compromise between gentlemanly nonchalance and regal assurance.
