The story of Equestrian Portrait of Charles I

Van Dyck became Charles I's Principal Painter in Ordinary in 1632, and this is the second of his equestrian portraits of the king, painted about 1637-38, a few years before the Civil War broke out in 1642. Charles wears the same suit of tilt armour as in the first, with the medallion of the Sovereign of the Order of the Garter, and is shown as a contemplative philosopher king.
