The story of Lord John Stuart and His Brother, Lord Bernard Stuart

The life-size double portrait, painted about 1638, shows the two youngest sons of Esme Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox, aged about 17 and 16. It measures 237.5 by 146.1 cm and has been in the National Gallery since 1988. Van Dyck also painted their elder brother James, later 4th Duke of Lennox, in a portrait now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
