The story of The Annunciation
The Annunciation was painted around 1434–1436 and is thought to have been the left inner wing of a triptych whose other wings have not been seen since before 1817; originally on panel, it has been transferred to canvas. Gabriel's words AVE GRA PLENA ('Hail, full of grace') are inscribed beside him, and Mary's reply ECCE ANCILLA D[OMI]NI is written upside down, because it is addressed to God. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit descend to her on seven rays of light from the upper window, with the dove following the same path. The panel was bought by the Tsar of Russia for the Hermitage and was sold by Stalin's government in 1930.

Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck was an early Netherlandish painter active in Bruges who was one of the early innovators of what became known as Early Netherlandish painting, and one of the supreme figures of the Early Northern Renaissance. Such was his legacy, that he has been called “the inventor of oil-painting” by Vasari, Ernst Gombrich, and others, although this claim is now considered an oversimplification.
