The story of Lucca Madonna
The Lucca Madonna was painted around 1437 and takes its name from the collection of Charles II, Duke of Parma and Lucca, which it belonged to in the early 19th century. Its carpentry suggests it was once the inner panel of a triptych, while its small size indicates it was meant for private devotion. The Virgin has been identified as a portrait of the painter's wife, Margaretha. The panel is now in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt.

Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck was an early Netherlandish painter active in Bruges who was one of the early innovators of what became known as Early Netherlandish painting, and one of the supreme figures of the Early Northern Renaissance. Such was his legacy, that he has been called “the inventor of oil-painting” by Vasari, Ernst Gombrich, and others, although this claim is now considered an oversimplification.
