The story of The Crucifixion and The Last Judgement (Diptych)
The diptych consists of two small panels, each just 56.5 by 19.7 cm, attributed to Jan van Eyck with areas finished by unidentified followers or members of his workshop. It is one of the early oil-on-panel masterpieces of the Northern Renaissance, known for its complex, highly detailed iconography, and was probably made for private devotion. The left wing shows Christ's followers grieving in the foreground, soldiers and spectators in the middle ground and the three crosses against a wide sky with Jerusalem in the distance; the right wing shows hell at the base, the resurrected awaiting judgement, and Christ in Majesty with saints, apostles, clergy and nobility above. The original gilt frames carry Biblical passages in Latin.

Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck was an early Netherlandish painter active in Bruges who was one of the early innovators of what became known as Early Netherlandish painting, and one of the supreme figures of the Early Northern Renaissance. Such was his legacy, that he has been called “the inventor of oil-painting” by Vasari, Ernst Gombrich, and others, although this claim is now considered an oversimplification.
