The story of Portrait of Cardinal Niccolò Albergati

The portrait dates to around 1431. A preparatory drawing with colour notes, made when van Eyck met Albergati during a peace congress in Antwerp, is in Dresden. Comparison shows that van Eyck changed several details in the painting, such as the depth of the shoulders and the size of the ear. Some modern scholars suggest the sitter may instead be Henry Beaufort.

Jan van Eyck

Jan van Eyck was an early Netherlandish painter active in Bruges who was one of the early innovators of what became known as Early Netherlandish painting, and one of the supreme figures of the Early Northern Renaissance. Such was his legacy, that he has been called “the inventor of oil-painting” by Vasari, Ernst Gombrich, and others, although this claim is now considered an oversimplification.
