The story of The Agony in the Garden

The Agony in the Garden is an egg tempera panel of 62.9 x 80 cm (NG1417) in the National Gallery, London. Mantegna used the fine tempera medium to describe small details such as the individual bricks of the city walls. His brother-in-law Giovanni Bellini is considered to have been inspired by it for his own version of the subject, painted between 1460 and 1465 and also in the National Gallery.
