The story of Parnassus
Parnassus, 159 x 192 cm, was the first picture Mantegna painted for Isabella d'Este's studiolo in the Ducal Palace of Mantua; paint was sent in 1497 and the court poet Paride da Ceresara proposed the theme. After Mantegna's death in 1506 parts, including the heads of the Muses, Apollo, Venus and the landscape, were repainted, possibly by Lorenzo Leonbruno. It passed to Cardinal Richelieu in 1627 and later entered the Louvre through the French royal collections.
